Because the playtime can vary upon usage, you should first make sure that you indeed have a bad battery or at least one that is failing. Apple has run tests using default factory settings to determine the maximum battery life. Below is a table of the various models and generations of iPods and their rated battery life.

Player Battery Life
iPod 1st / 2nd Generation 10 hours
iPod 3rd Generation 8 hours
iPod 4th Generation 12 hours
iPod Mini 1st Generation 8 hours
iPod Mini 2nd Generation 18 hours
iPod Nano 1st Generation 14 hours
iPod Photo 15 hours
iPod Touch 1st Generation 22 hours

Not sure what iPod generation you have? Find your iPod's part number or model in the menu on the left. The description should tell you the generation.

Now that you know your iPod's rated battery life, you will want to do a battery test to see if it's still good. Load your iPod with enough tracks to play for the maximum rated battery life. Turn off the backlight and the equalizer and use the default settings. Make a note of the time and let it play until the battery indicator drops to nothing. If it doesn't last within 80% of the rated battery life, it may be a good time for you to buy a replacement battery.
